Too often, the journey to a holiday destination is seen as a means to an end, rather than an actual enjoyable part of the journey. Here, we discuss taking a road trip through one of Europe most stunning countries to see what it has to offer at ground level. Italy is renowned for good food, great culture, stunning landscapes, and, yes, the passionate people too. But there are a few things you need to consider before taking on the great escape.
The Vehicle – If you are taking your own, make sure it is road legal for the country and that you have suitable insurance and break down cover. If you are flying in and renting a car, carefully consider what type you’ll need. City and mountain driving differ greatly in Italy. Check and double check your car rental insurance documents to understand what they cover before you leave the showroom and sure someone shows you where the petrol (or diesel) goes!
The Route – If you are feeling brave, let the open road guide you! We’d recommend carrying a map anyway though… Otherwise, it really is best to take a sat nav to help you find your way. It you’d like to take in the big cities, do so with caution in a car, especially a rented one. Local driving customs are fast and close with much flashing (lights) and beeping.
Don’t be worried, the locals use the horn as a greeting as much as an insult! The costal and mountain roads are the best places to see in a car through Italy. The Almalfi Coast is unbeatable for it’s nooks and crannies of stunning beaches and cliff top resorts. We also like the drive from Porenza to Metaponto and Bolanzo to Corina d’Ampezzo.
The Sights – Like every country, Italy has it’s ‘must see’ destinations. Outside of the stunning cities, we love Lake Garda and the winding roads that surround it. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and perfect for a remote retreat. Should it take your fancy, a trip to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello is a great way to spend a morning. There is a fantastic high street that is great for people watching outside café’s drinking strong Italian coffee.
Be warned, there are a lot of Ferrari’s driving through and you are guaranteed to feel a tiny bit envious! Further south, the stunning town of Sorrento is the idyllic romantic getaway with late night restaurants, cliff top views and an extensive range of boutique-style hotels.
Driving through Italy is the perfect way to see a little bit of the real Italian way!
